Questions for Shonda Rhimes
I just finished watching "An Evening With Shonda Rhimes" on www.emmys.com. I have a ton of questions for Shonda Rhimes about Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Like any inquisitive fan, I want to know everything. I love to analyze the storylines and the characters of Grey's in particular. I was late coming to Grey's. My first episode was when George O'Malley died. It was rough, but awesome at the same time. I then proceeded to watch the first five seasons in the span of a month to get caught up. I was instantly sucked into Shondaland. It's like Hotel California... "you can check out anytime, but you can't ever leave."
I think one of the most powerful pieces of dialog this season was Meredith explaining to Owen why it was a bad idea for Cristina to have a the baby.
Season 8, Episode 1: "Free Falling"
Meredith: Okay, do you know what will happen to Christina if she has a kid that she doesn't want? It will almost kill her. Trying to pretend that she loves a kid as much as she loves surgery will almost kill her, and it'll almost kill your kid. Do you know what it's like to be raised by someone who didn't want you? I do. To know you stood in the way of your mother's career? I do. I was raised by a Christina. My mother was a Christina. And as the child she didn't want, I am telling you, don't do this to her, because she's kind and she cares and she won't make it. The guilt of resenting her own kid will eat her alive.

When she said that she was raised by a Cristina Yang, it absolutely broke my heart because it was so true. It showed how much she loved Cristina and how much she truly understands where Cristina was coming from. It also showed that she completely understood Ellis and knew that despite the fact that Ellis was career driven and probably didn’t want to have a baby, she did the best she could with Meredith even though her best wasn’t all that great. But it raised questions for me.
The dialog between Meredith and Owen and the revelation of Meredith saying that she was raised by a Cristina Yang seemed to serve the obvious purpose of getting Owen to come around and support Cristina. But I wonder if it was intended to reveal another complex layer to Cristina and Meredith's relationship as well. I watched that scene wondering if Cristina is so much like Ellis, what makes her relationship with Meredith work so well.
I mean, they do have their rough patches. I still don't think that Meredith gets the depth of what Cristina went through during the shooting. When Meredith told Gary Clark to shoot her, I doubt she understood what that would do to Cristina. I think that Meredith is the only person that Cristina has given herself to 100% since her father died. To lose Meredith, would've pushed Cristina to a place that she wouldn't have come back from. But just like any relationship, they got back to a place of love... I don't think that it is the same place where they were before. But they are back to a place of love. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the boards...
So I guess that wasn't so much of question as it was personal commentary. But I wonder if I'm on target or if I'm over thinking Meredith and Cristina like my friend Emily insists.
